here's a cute story from today about a bunch of rescued cats...check out the shot of me holding the cat! before i picked it up, i asked one of the workers at the shelter, "do i hold it like a baby?" lol she looked at me and was like, um...no. haha..too funny! honestly, ive never actually held a cat before...ive petted them or picked them up for a second, but not really held one. i think im a natural! right...

http://www.nbc17.com/midatlantic/ncn/news.apx.-content-articles-NCN-2008-01-31-0024.html
there are a few things that i dont like: women drivers (yeah, i know i am one!), being late (meaning, when i'm late...doesnt really bother me so much when other people are late), anything that has to do with math and...WORKING OUT IN THE MORNING. i seriously hate that...im a night excerciser. a good time for me is about 8 pm. however, today i went at 8 in the morning and i hated every second of it. however, now that im done and dont have to worry about it for the rest of the day, im happy it's over. but it was torcher going through it! (hm, could i be a little more dramatic?! lol)

today my mom, aunt sue and aunt eileen will be coming in for a visit...im excited!( my two aunt's are my dad's sisters) when i was living up in morgantown, all three came to visit me at one time and we had a great time (i introduced them to CG's Maggie's restaurant...one of my all-time favorite restaurants in morgantown...although i heard it either closed down or relocated from its spot in westover :(

should be a good time this weekend!

sad!

im typically not one who believes that celebrities should expect much privacy in their lives...whether it's work or personal. they chose to be an actor, model, singer, whatever so you have to take the good (lots of perks!) with the bad (being photographed a lot). but this whole thing with britney spears is getting ridiculous...she's not simply just having a hard time dealing with it...there is something seriously, mentally wrong with this woman and she needs professional help. people need to leave her alone or she is honestly going to die. its not just a few people taking pictures of her...she's being followed every second of every day. i cant even imagine what that must be like. here's her latest problem from last night :

LOS ANGELES -- Britney Spears was taken from her home by ambulance early Thursday and escorted to the hospital by more than a dozen police officers.
Discuss This Story
A Los Angeles police officer, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, said the 26-year-old pop star was being taken to "get help" but did not give the ambulance's destination. The Los Angeles Times cited unnamed authorities who said Spears was being placed on a "mental evaluation hold."
The Times said Spears was taken to UCLA Medical Center. Center spokesman Mark Wheeler declined to comment Thursday, citing privacy laws.
Spears' police escort Thursday included motorcycles, two cruisers, and two helicopters.
On Jan. 3, police were called to her home when she refused to return her two young sons, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, to ex-husband Kevin Federline, who has custody.
Officers had paramedics haul Spears to a hospital for undisclosed reasons. She was released after a day and a half in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Police also went to the home Monday night after someone reported a swarm of paparazzi trespassing in the singer's gated community. When officers arrived, they didn't see anyone trespassing, police said, but citations were issued for several illegally parked cars.
Spears has been in a highly public downward spiral since filing for divorce from Federline in November 2006.
Her bizarre antics include shaving her head bald, attacking a car with an umbrella and bringing along a paparazzo pal on trips to a courthouse in her child custody case.

new set!

i feel a little dorky for being excited about this, but today our new set made its first appearance on the air! its looks AWESOME!! really slick and high tech and we actually have our anchors standing, not sitting. personally, i like it better because they seem more authoratative (is that word?!) standing then sitting. there's all kinds of neat camera movements and different sets that can be used, but for the first week, we're just going to be using simple shots until everyone gets used to it...i cant wait to see what it's going to be like in a month when we can do cool stuff with the set!

cute pics :)

since i know most of you think im a nerd and never go out, i thought i would put up some pics so you could see the proof from this weekend! these are from saturday night when we went to downtown Raleigh...

i forgot to put this up in my last post, but here's a clip of dane cook's show! i think this is the HBO version though so im not sure how the language will be, but it will be really funny!

i watched dane cook's premiere of his newest show "vicious circle" on comedy central tonight and oh my gosh, it was HILARIOUS! you know when you watch tv and you're all by yourself cracking up laughing?(wait, am i the only one who does that? lol) well, yeah, that was me watching the show. so funny!

if you didn't catch it tonight, definitely look for the rerun!

dawson's creek

since i know im the not the only one who was obsessed with "Dawson's Creek" throughout highschool and through much of college, i thought i would share this article found with some interesting bits of information. brings back memories, huh? lol :)

Wilmington — It's been 10 years since 15-year-old Joey Potter discussed her emerging hormones with best friend Dawson Leery in his second-story bedroom. Ten years since Pacey Witter, dressed as a sea monster for a role in Dawson's amateur movie, ogled new-girl-in-town Jen Lindley. Ten years since a certain teen drama became a national phenomenon and ushered Wilmington's film community into the national spotlight.

On Jan. 20, 1998, "Dawson's Creek" premiered to wildly mixed reviews. Praised and reviled for its hyper-sexual, super-wordy dialogue, the show centered around four high school students in the small town of Capeside, Massachusetts - wannabe filmmaker Dawson (James Van Der Beek), sweet girl-next-door Joey (Katie Holmes), lovable scoundrel Pacey (Joshua Jackson) and new vixen in town Jen (Michelle Williams).

"Dawson's Creek" struck a chord with teens and young adults, launching six seasons of what would become the WB network's most popular show and inspiring thousands of young people to visit its sets on the Cape Fear Coast.
Of course, film tourism existed here before Dawson's Creek. But the show was in a league of its own.

"I call it the 'Dawson's Creek' phenomenon," said Connie Nelson of the Cape Fear Convention Center and Visitors Bureau.

Over spring break in 1999, "we got hundreds of calls from people who wanted to know where Mollye's Market was, where Dawson's house was," she said. The visitors bureau soon published a Frequently Asked Questions sheet for the show. "We still put it out and people still pick it up," Nelson said.

Of course, another teen drama calls Wilmington home now. "One Tree Hill" began filming here just as Dawson's Creek finished in 2003. But while "One Tree Hill's" fans are passionate and many, the show never became part of the cultural zeitgeist the way "Dawson's Creek" did. The creation of North Carolina native Kevin Williamson, the show turned its core cast into stars almost overnight. And no production since has created such a buzz around town, which is why, 10 years later, it's still making headlines.

Among the facts worth knowing about "Dawson's Creek":

The show was created by Williamson, who penned the popular "Scream" movies. Williamson grew up in Oriental, North Carolina, and based the character of Dawson on himself.

After its debut, "Dawson's Creek" quickly became The WB's No. 1 show among 18- to 49-year-olds and delivered the young network's highest ratings ever in both of its regular time slots (9 p.m. Tuesdays and 8 p.m. Wednesdays). Its first season attracted an impressive 6.6 million viewers per episode.

Acknowledging how important the show was to its schedule, The WB network chose to re-air the "Dawson's Creek" pilot during its final hour of the network's existence in September 2006.
Future "One Tree Hill" stars Chad Michael Murray, Hilarie Burton, and Lee Norris all made guest appearances on "Dawson's Creek."

TV Guide created four separate covers of its March 7, 1998, issue - one for each of the show's stars.

Among the locations made famous:

Hell's Kitchen, 118 Princess St.

"Dawson's Creek" needed a down-and-dirty college bar for its last season. And filmmakers needed to use it often. So instead of renting one of downtown's many watering holes, producers bought one. Actually, they bought a natural food store called Mollye's Market and, using movie magic, converted it into just the bar they were looking for.
When the show ended and the property was put up for sale, most of the set - band posters, graffiti-ed tables and other knickknacks - remained in the building. Local restaurateur Ash Aziz bought the property in 2003 and turned it into a real restaurant and bar. He kept everything intact that would not conflict with a real restaurant's operation. He even kept the name.
Although Hell's Kitchen is under different ownership now, it still retains nearly all the "Dawson's Creek" memorabilia.

Water Street Restaurant, 5 S. Water St.

No "Dawson's Creek" pilgrimage is complete without a stop by the fish house Dawson's family owned, Leery's Fresh Fish. The building still looks just like it did when all the characters stopped by for a bite to eat after their high school classes. Water Street Restaurant can be spotted often through the show's early seasons.

University of North Carolina Wilmington, 601 S. College Rd.
Film crews rolled onto campus twice a month to film outdoor locations. Several buildings were used, including William Randall Library and Alderman Hall, which served as the facade of Capeside High School. Most interior scenes, though, were filmed on a soundstage at EUE/Screen Gems Studios.

During filming, UNCW used its role as a central figure on "Dawson's Creek" as a recruitment tool, and many of its students were interns on the production. The university is proud of its part on the show. A plaque on a bench at Alderman Hall keeps that history alive.

Hewlett's Creek
So where, exactly is Dawson's Creek? Well, there's no such place. All those beautiful sunset shots of Dawson standing on his dock among the marsh grass were actually filmed along Hewlett's Creek, best viewed from Pine Grove Road between Masonboro Loop Road and Holly Tree Drive.
Dawson's house was an actual private residence along the water. But it's not open for tours.

Dockside Restaurant, 1308 Airlie Rd., Wrightsville Beach

When Dawson and friends go to The Icehouse for a few beers, they are sitting inside a downtown bar called The Icehouse. But when the cameras pan from the bar to the outside where blue water sparkles and boats pass, you're actually looking at a view from Dockside Restaurant at Wrightsville Beach. The water is the Intracoastal Waterway.
The restaurant eventually burned down on the show because in reality, the downtown site became unusable because of an extensive construction project next door. And to make matters worse, the real Icehouse was soon demolished, leaving an empty lot and lots of memories along the Cape Fear River.

Since their days on "Dawson's Creek," the four main stars have had varying degrees of success.
Katie Holmes, the show's freshest face 10 years ago is now its most famous. Holmes' post-"Creek" life has included movie roles as the president's kid (in 2004's "First Daughter") and a superhero's girlfriend (in 2005's "Batman Begins"). But her real-life role as Tom Cruise's wife and baby mama catapulted her to Hollywood's A-list. She's now starring in "Mad Money" opposite Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah.

Michelle Williams is the only cast member to be nominated for an Oscar, for her supporting role in "Brokeback Mountain." She was engaged to "Brokeback" co-star Heath Ledger (the two have a daughter, Matilda) but they called off marriage plans last fall.
Ledger, 28, died Tuesday in his New York apartment.
Williams is attached to several upcoming high-profile films, including "Shutter Island," a Martin Scorsese-directed mystery due out in 2009.

James Van Der Beek landed leading but forgettable roles in "The Rules of Attraction" and "Texas Rangers." He turned in a creepy performance as a killer last season on CBS' "Criminal Minds" and popped up recently as a bigoted advertiser on "Ugly Betty." He married actress Heather McComb in 2003.

Thanks to Disney's "Mighty Ducks' movies, Joshua Jackson was the most famous cast member in 1998. He recently had small roles in "Ocean's 11" (2001) and "Bobby" (2006) and his planned guest turn on "Grey's Anatomy" could help reignite his career.

so far today have been a highly unproductive day for me lol i got up late, went online for a bit, got some lunch and cleaned the kitchen. i feel like i deserve it though! i worked 7 days straight because i came in last weekend to cover the "winter weather" situation, so this is my first day off in a week.

last night i went out with a friend of mine who is a reporter at the ABC affiliate in town (and she an i had a bunch of TV news classes together at UF), sabrina, and three of her friends which was an absolute blast. didnt get home until around 3 am though which is why i woke up late today.

i'm going to head to the gym in a half hour and tonight me and one of my friends from work, jackie, are heading to Mura which is a really nice sushi restaurant in raleigh. the food is excellent there so im excited to hang out with her :)

and here are a couple of my stories to keep you occupied:

okay, i hate to be the stereotypical female in the 23-30 year old bracket and write about this but i can't not write about it any longer. i seriously cannot believe that heath ledger died. when someone told me yesterday, i think my jaw hit the floor i was so surprised. i guess they're saying may have been a drug od, but they didn't find anything from the autopsy yet. i'd prefer not to think it was a drug issue...he doesn't seem like the type! (but then again, i guess they never do) i didnt see any of the movies that he won all kinds of awards for (the patriot, brokeback mountain, etc...), but i loved him in "ten things i hate about you"... he was just so handsome and sweet!

and now...i will be leaving the 15-year-old girl in me and returning to the 25-year-old adult.

welcome back :)
here's my story from yesterday about the Dow dropping 450 points at the opening bell yesterday...this is part of the reason i enjoy my job...you get to do stories about the UNC peace corp one day and the next day, you're doing something on the stock market. lots of variety!

here's a story from today for your viewing pleasure :) this guy volunteered with the Peace Corps for three years...they stuck him in the Amazon Jungle...he was three and a half hours away from the nearest volunteer so it was pretty much him and the locals. crazy!
im happy to say i made it to the gym tonight...i did not, however, leave at 8. i left at 8:20..still not bad though! i have a rule for myself when it comes to working out which is, if i dont feel like working out, i tell myself to get there and if after i've been running for 10 minutes i still want to quit...then i can stop. ive never stopped once ive started though. sometimes the tough part is just getting started and then you're good to go.

well, im highly boring today so ill spare you and end it here :) (otherwise, i may start talking about those ritz crackers again lol)

not in the mood

you know those days when you dont feel like going to the gym?

i'm having one of those. it's 7:30 pm right now...the goal is to leave by 8 pm.

i'll let you know how that one goes...

Sunday, January 20, 2008

just curious...

i want to warn you that if you read this post, it will be 30 seconds of your life that you will never get back.

youve been warned!

i just want to know why it is that on the back of Ritz cracker boxes, they make suggestions about what kinds of things you can put on top of the cracker. it says that you can put cheese and a small apple slice or hey, go crazy, even peanut butter and jelly! come one, does anyone REALLY need ideas of what to put on the cracker?

but i guess when your product is just a plain (but still tasty!) cracker, what else could you possibily have to say?

weather, weather, weather!

well, we were expecting 2-5 inches of snow this weekend. what did we get? practically nothing! fyi, it doesnt snow around here a lot so with 2-5 inches predicted, people were flipping out...it was pretty funny! lol i acutally ended up working on saturday and sunday because we needed a couple more reporters ready to go for the "winter weather."

last night, i did liveshots at the Dean Smith Center where UNC was playing Maryland...it started to snow flurry just as people were coming to the game so we talked with them about the weather and the game and how they wouldnt miss the game for anything. side note, UNC lost by 2! bet that number one spot in the country will be gone when the rankings come out again! anyway, so it flurried for a couple of hours but never even stuck to the ground.

then this morning, my and two other reporters came in at 5 a.m...we were all doing liveshots in different areas of raleigh. i was along I-440 talking about road conditions...and let me tell you, the roads were perfectly clear..no problems! we didnt get the snow we expected and the DOH salted the streets really well so there were really no icy patches...at least on the primary roads. so here's what i did, along with the photographer i was working with...we did liveshotsfor the morning newscasts at 6 am, 6:30 am, 7 am, 7:30 am, 9 am and 9:30 am. basically, i had to figure out different ways to rephrase the same thing 6 times...and when there's really nothing going on, that's not always easy. thankfully, we managed to pull it off and so did the other 2 reporters as well. hey what can you do? the weather doesnt always do what you think it's going to (although i have to say that i do feel bad for all the weather forecasters from all the stations because they all were predicting 2-5 inches and we barely had .5 inches.)

so i didnt really get to do much this weekend since i was working. im going to head to the gym in about an hour and do a little cleaning around here afterwards. sounds like fun, huh? :)

e-mail

i am so overwhelmed with how full my work e-mail inbox is, i dont even know where to start! but having it so full is stressing me the heck out...i think part of me just feels like if i let it go, it'll just clean itself out.

sadly, that is not the case!
um, so the "wintery mix" turned out to be just about nothing. snow flurries fell at about 4:30 this morning and maybe lasted 45 minutes at most. the roads did not freeze over because the temp wasn't cold enough. no problems on the morning commute for drivers...at all. we were deifinitely over prepared for this. however, i would much rather be over prepared then under prepared with people scrambling all over the place at the last minute.

it is now 8:45 am and im done with work for the day...granted i did get up at 3 in the morning, but still. i have to go to the station at noon to get problem with my lap top fixed so that should be extremely exciting. im a little tired right now, but not too bad. im sure by bed time ill be ready to pass out since i was up so early.

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

"wintery mix"?

tomorrow should be intersting weather-wise around here. we are expecting a "wintery mix" during the morning commute. apparently, only supposed to get about half an inch of snow but the roads will likely be very icey. this kind of weather doesnt happen a lot around here so it's been kind of funny to hear everyone freak about it. lol i figure that since i was able to handle the winter weather in WV, i should have no problem dealing with it here. hopefully people will just SLOW DOWN on the roads tomorrow...i really think that could solve 90 percent of the wrecks that will likely happen.

i will also be getting up at about 3:30 in the morning to cover all the winter weather mess. the goal is to be sleeping not later than 9 am...im just not sure if i can fall asleep that early!

ill let you know how it goes...

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

the only thing better then seeing someone knock it out of the park with their "American Idol" audtion is seeing someone completely bomb. i know that's a little mean, but really..some of these people are horrendous they are so bad, i just refuse to believe that they truly believe they are any good! im not saying i would get up there and be the next carrie underwood, but come on people...it's brutal! lol but watching bad singers is a heck of a lot more funny then watching really good ones! when i was at UF, William Hung from American Idol (remember him? the chinese kid who sang that ricky martin song) came and performed at the O'Connell Center for midnight madness. it was hilarious...he's really bad, but he's so bad it was actually kind of endearing. and you gotta love him for busting out with the gator chomp while he was there!

since i am part of the media, i feel like i should know the answer to the question, but i dont. ive always wanted to know why it is that some stories get tons of coverage and others dont. this most recent event with the marine who's on the run for killing maria lauterbach (who was a also a marine and pregnant) is what's making me think of that. i know this one is pretty scandalous because they're both marines and she was pregnant...but i still always wonder what exactly it is that makes media outlets pick up on one story and not another.

strange industry i work in, huh?

motivation

i really need to get motivated this week to do a couple of things that i said i would do about a month ago. i have some bar stools to put together and i need to hook up my fax machine. im sure once i actually start these projects, it will take about an hour. here's the problem: even though i consider myself to be a motivated person, certain things, i just get lazy about.

i will give myself through the weekend to complete these projects because it probably won't happen during the week with work going on.

(here is a link to a different version of my story from last night...)

so does anyone know what a moratorium is? yeah, me either...at least until i did this story tonight! lol
http://www.nbc17.com/midatlantic/ncn/news.apx.-content-articles-NCN-2008-01-14-0016.html

im actually very tired and my feet are hurting. today was a pretty long day at work...basically was working from 10:30 this morning until 11:30 tonight. but i cant really complain because i have some days when im home by 6 pm...it's give and take!

sweet dreams :)

Sunday, January 13, 2008

sunday is the one day of the week that i dont feel bad about being lazy on. i slept in, late went to the gym and went to the grocery store. that's all i did. another thing i enjoy doing on the weekends is watching marathon's of my two favorite shows...today it was America's Next Top Model and yesterday was Law and Order: SVU. i've probably seen every episode of ANTM at least twice but i still always get sucked in. law and order: svu is a show that ive really only gotten into over the last year or so...i dont catch the new episodes a lot, but i love watching the reruns.

does all this make me a boring person? probably, but you know what...i dont care!

one thing i dont like about sunday's...it means tomorrow is monday. back to work! :)

Saturday, January 12, 2008

why, ladies, why?

one thing i have never understood is women who drag their husband or boyfriend with them to the mall. why do they do that? no man likes going to the mall...from the looks on their faces, you'd think it was a fate worse than death! i had to go up to the mall today to return some stuff, and i must have seen a dozen guys looking completely miserable. do these women not realize this or are they just ignoring it? i think guys only like to go the mall when they have something specifc in mind to buy...not window shopping, like us girls do.

ladies, stop the cruel and unusual punishment. let your guy go watch a game and have a beer while you go shopping. then, everyone wins!

moving to a different topic...

i got a really pretty hair cut today. what wasnt so great, was the price. 60 dollars! i have never spent that much on a hair cut...i could buy a pair of jeans for that much. it was kind of a fancy salon so i guess i should have expected it, but still...all she did was shampoo, cut one inch off and blow dry straight. that being said, i did have two complete strangers come up to me at the store later in the afternoon to tell me how great my hair looked. but c'mon...60 is overpriced for what i had done.

sigh, oh well. no one ever said being a woman is easy!

forgot to post this a second ago...i know i got a kick out of it! and please take note of number 10 on the list...too funny! lol happy reading!

10 Sexiest Jobs

By Anthony Balderrama, CareerBuilder.com writer
You’re at a party. You spot someone across the room and you make your way toward each other. Things are going well, so after some small talk you ask, “What do you do for a living?” The answer you receive determines if you exchange phone numbers or say goodnight.
Whether or not we admit it, what people do for a living affects their sex appeal. A recent CareerBuilder.com survey asked participants what occupations they consider the sexiest. You might be surprised that the top picks weren’t necessarily based on salary or looks.

Here are the 10 sexiest jobs, according to the survey.

1. Entertainer/ModelWhy they’re sexy: Entertainers and models make a living by looking good, so you can bet they’re easy on the eyes. Their dedication to their dream in such a competitive industry is also attractive.Where you’ll find them: Supermodels are on the runways in Paris, Milan and New York or at photo shoots in major cities around the world. Entertainers can find work in any city, but New York and Los Angeles certainly have the best opportunities.Pros: They travel the world, are famous and have huge paychecks.Cons: Competition is fierce and there’s a lot of pressure to maintain their looks.

2. Cocktail WaitressWhy they’re sexy: Although it might not seem like an obvious top pick, consider the fact that the waitress is probably dressed in a short skirt and bringing you drinks, which never hurt anybody’s sex appeal. Where you’ll find them: At any establishment that serves alcohol — casinos, bars, clubs, restaurants and concert halls.Pros: A good cocktail waitress can make a killing on tips alone, especially in an upscale establishment.Cons: They have to deal with drunken customers and they often work in smoke-filled bars and clubs.

3. AthleteWhy they’re sexy: Professional athletes are likely in good — no, great — shape. Not to mention they’ve probably been practicing their sport since childhood, so you know they’re disciplined and goal-oriented.Where you’ll find them: When they’re not training, they’re on the field (or rink or court or at whatever venue they perform at).Pros: The chance to be famous and internationally adored is pretty nice.Cons: The odds of making it big are slim.

4. FirefighterWhy they’re sexy: Firefighters are brave and selfless. Who wouldn’t find that attractive? Where you’ll find them: Everywhere. Every city needs firefighters, though some smaller towns have volunteer squads.Pros: They save lives and serve the community.Cons: They risk their lives every day.

5. CowboyWhy they’re sexy: Few archetypes are as ingrained in our culture as the cowboy. He’s masculine, chivalrous and everything else we admired in Western movies.Where you’ll find them: On ranches in rural areas. Texas, Oklahoma, Wyoming and California are the most traditional examples of cowboy country.Pros: It’s a quiet life away from the city.Cons: They have to work with their hands and outdoors, regardless of the season.

6. NurseWhy they’re sexy: Nurses keep you comfortable, make sure you’re healthy and bring you morphine when you’re hurting. That they devote their lives to caring for others and understand all that medical jargon only makes them sexier. Where you’ll find them: In hospitals, your doctor’s office and other health care facilities. Pros: They care for patients, watch them get better and put a baby in its parents' arms for the first time.Cons: The hours are long; patients and their families can be demanding; and there are plenty of sad events they have to witness, too.

7. ArtistWhy they’re sexy: The average artist is doing what makes him happy, not what will bring him fame or money — and that’s pretty sexy. How many occupations can you say that about?Where you’ll find them: Everywhere. Painters, photographers, sculptors and other types of artists work in their own studios, in offices for ad agencies or on location for photo shoots.Pros: They spend their days being creative and get paid for it.Cons: The paying work that’s easiest to find is often boring and doesn’t allow artists to express themselves.

8. Military ProfessionalWhy they’re sexy: Well, they’ve got the ultimate uniform, if you’re into that sort of thing. The military also instills a sense of discipline, so you can count on them to be responsible and dependable.Where you’ll find them: On military bases throughout the country.Pros: Job security and good pay.Cons: Risk of dying a war; long-term commitment and willingness to relocate frequently, which means sticking with a job no matter where it takes you.

9. Construction WorkerWhy they’re sexy: Didn’t you see that soft drink commercial where all the women stare out their window to watch the construction worker take off his shirt?Where you’ll find them: Wherever a new building is going up, a house is being renovated or a road is being repaved.Pros: Their job keeps them in shape and their hard work is often rewarded with a nice salary. Cons: Performing manual labor every day is tiring and sometimes dangerous.

10. TV Anchor/PersonalityWhy they’re sexy: Maybe it’s the way they talk with authority, seem to know everything and make you feel like you’re best friends. (Or maybe it’s the fact that you don’t know if they’re really wearing pants under that desk.)Where you’ll find them: On your TV in the morning, at noon and at night. Pros: They get to be on television and get the news before anybody else.Cons: They can spend years working in small cities before they get a job in a major market.

strike one

i made my first factual error (since i started my new job...yeah, i had a couple channel 12!) in a story that i did last night. it wasn't major, but basically i didn't phrase a sentence properly and it came out sounding different then what i meant. the guy who i interviewed (who ive done stories with before so he knows this is not typical of me) sent me an e-mail this morning and thanked me for covering the story, but also pointed out the error . he was very nice about it...but i HATE when that happens! even if it's just a minor mistake, it's always an embarassing. honestly, i make very few errors in my reporting and i pride myself on that so when something like this, as minor as it is, happens...it's still not a good feeling.

what can i say? im not the perfect reporter all the time!

hmm...i guess that would make me human!
i have finally found a good gym around here to get a membership with. reasonably priced with good ammenities and lots of classes to take. i have a nice workout facility where i live, but i miss taking spinning classes and i knew i would need to get to a gym if i wanted to take them. plus, this one also has a basketball court which i will definitely be using once in a while.

well, i have to say that nothing is really going on. hopefully i will be more interesting next time i post :)

smile!

the picture taking went well this afternoon! and i was right...they caked the make up on. lol funny enough though, in the picture, it barely looks like i have any on. in person...um, lets just say that was a completely different story. then again, the "no make up look" wasnt really what we were going for apparently! i was told our pictures might be ready to go on the website by the end of the week so we'll see if that happens. i know they're going to be doing all kinds of photoshop stuff to the pictures so it probably wont even really look like me...im thinking its going to look like the mannequin version of me. haha

well, im going to keep this one short since i just got back from running and am wanting to grab a shower.

g'night :)

meetings, meetings, meetings

here is my general feeling about (most) meetings: if it goes more than about an hour and a half, the organizer has not planned it time efficiently. i think there are very few topics that need more than an hour and a half to be talked about. i bring this up because i was working on a story tonight that i had to attend a meeting to cover. the meeting started at 7 pm and didn't end until 9:15 pm. are you kidding me? i would say the last 45 minutes to an hour were just the same things being repeated with different words. honestly, people stop paying attention after an about an hour anyway so you might as well keep it short.

on a completely unrelated note...

tomorrow at noon i have my appointment at a studio to get my picture taken for our website...im excited! our assistant news director told us they will do our make up for us and everything...geez, im going to feel more like a model then a news reporter tomorrow! lol actually, having someone else do your make up is a little scary...i just know they're going to cake it on! i guess as long as it looks good in the picture, i can always wash it off when the pictures are done!

shopping, bowling and michelle michael

is it possible for me to go shopping two days in a row? yes it is. today me and one of my friends from work, jaclyn, went to the mall just to "window shop". ha. right. 2 and a half hours, 3 shirts, two bottles of lotion and about 70 bucks later....our "window shopping" was done. lol it was a fun time with her though so i'm glad we went!

also today...my station had a company get together at a bowling alley...it was so fun! AND i bowled four strikes in three games! i havent gone bowling in at least 3 years so it was a pretty impressive turnout for me. of the three games, my highest score was 105. yeah, i know, nothing to really brag about it but considering i barely ever bowl, i was happy with it.

i have a couple of projects around my place that i need to work one. i bought some bar stools last weekend and i need to get on putting them together. i also bought a printer/scanner/copier/faxier that i also need to figure out how to hook up to my computer and working properly. i do realize that some people might not find this task very intimidating, but i do. im not really good at putting stuff together...but then again, i've never really given myself a fair chance because i always get help from someone before i even try it on my own. this time, im going to do it on my own! and then if i try really hard and still cant do it, then i will get help. i think that's a fair deal.

oh, so the Michelle Michael "48 Hours Mystery" was awesome. they did such a good job with the story...i was really impressed at their accuracy and how well it was told. can i just say the Perri DiChristipher (asst. prosecuting attorney) is amazing at her job. ive covered 3 murder trials with her helping marcia ashdown prosecute and i think she is just phenomenal at what she does. i love how confident and professional she is when she's giving her opening statement or cross examining witnesses. her demeanor just demands the respect of the entire courtroom...you cant help but watch her. everytime i see her in action, i always feel like im watching an episode of "Law and Order" because she is that good. and she totally owned Michelle Michael when she was talking about how many times she (michelle) lied to police. if you didnt get to catch it, go to 48 Hours website and you can watch the show in its entirety...it's worth the 40 minutes of your time, i promise!

today was a productive day of doing some shopping and cleaning. and i even got to play some basketball at a local gym which was awesome. what can i say? i havent played a game since august, but i still got it ;) i can tell im going to be very sore tomorrow..im already starting to feel it!

i think it's funny how the second one holiday ends, the retail stores have already moved onto the next. i swear, on january 1st, i started seeing valentine's stuff. it's like we cant even enjoy the memories of one holiday because it's already moving onto the next! i think valentine's day is a very commerical holiday, but it's a sweet idea. it's a good excuse to show people you love them (not that you should need an excuse to do that!). who cares if it's a hallmark holiday? and while i'm on the subject of all things lovey-dovey, here is a three minute story of what might be the sweetest thing ive ever seen...i almost wanted to cry. enjoy :)

"but, he's gay"

im sure most of you have seen this ten second clip before, but it's funny so here it is! i bet she was so embarassed...but it happens to the best of us...i'm sure i will have my own you tub on-air moment at some point too (but hopefully millions of people wont be watching it...like with this one!)

the story i was working on with the make-a-wish girl who wanted to go to a UNC Tar Heel game came out really good! the family was really sweet too which is always an added bonus. this is my favorite story that i've done so far here...i wish every story could be this heart warming :)

http://www.nbc17.com/midatlantic/ncn/news.apx.-content-articles-NCN-2008-01-03-0025.html

other then the story, today was not really a good day...i found out some sad news about my best friend at the station today. she's doing all right, but some things are going to be changing and im very sad about it...dont want to get into too much detail here!

g'night all! and for those of you WV people, dont forget to watch the Michelle Michael on 48 Hours Mystery this Saturday night! at 10 pm on saturday, i will be sitting on my couch watching every second of it...im anxious to see it!

random

i had a random moment tonight. i was at the UNC men's basketball game at the Dean Dome working on a story and i was waiting for the people i was interviewing to show up. some guy, maybe 35 or 40 years old, was standing near me with his daughter, about kindergarten age, when he asked me if i would watch his daughter while he went to the bathroom. okayyyy...who asks a complete stranger to wait with their daughter while they completely leave for about five minutes? granted, he knew i was with a news station, but still...i would never do that with my child! what if i was some kind of nutcase and kidnapped his little girl! can you imagine how awful that would be for his family? "sorry, honey, i left our daughter with a complete and total stranger while i went to the bathroom and now she's gone." i will say this little girl was very cute (and she had red hair so you know i was in love with her! lol) and we got along quite nicely.. i found out her name is Leah, she likes eating Skittles, playing soccer and doesn't like basketball. thankfully for the dad, i am a nice person and would never take someone's child...but others out there will! actually, i should have just taken his daughter and hide with her from him for a minute or two to scare the crap out of him so he's frantically looking around...then show up and be like, "sir, this is why you should never leave your child with a stranger." he would have needed to learn that lesson!

switching gears...

the reason i was at the game is because there's a young girl, about 20, who is actually a triplett, but she has cerebral palsy. her family contacted the Make A Wish Foundation and her wish was to go to a North Carolina basketball game. she loves the team and LOVES Tyler Hansbrough...he's the star player and, in the eyes of the females, would basically be equivalent to patrick beilein at wvu...all the girls love him and think he's cute. anyway, so she got her wish granted and was at the game. i could not stop smiling watching how much fun she was having with her dad. it was the sweetest thing ever...she was so excited to be there! she was all decked out in her north carolina blue, had a little UNC tar heel sticker on her check...it was awesome. i am really exicted about this story...these are always my favorite kinds to do!

gnome-napping

this is really funny! a photographer at my station has started a blog where he takes pictures of a gnome (ya know, the kind you see in people's yards) and posts pictures of the gnomes adventures. a couple of years ago, there was a couple somewhere who had their gnome stolen and for about a year and a half they recevied pcitures in the mail of their gnome in all kinds of places (grand canyon, paris, etc...) after that year and a half the gnome magically returned to its owners and had a note with it saying he was tired of traveling and came back home. lol so that's why all this gnome-napping started.

anyway, here is his blog and you really should check it out! the pictures are hilarious (there is even one where the gnome is standing with a microphone looking like he's doing a live shot...i love it!)

kidding me?

here is part of an article written by a newspaper reporter in philly...he's talking about the difference between newspaper and tv reporters. some of this might be true (like stations wanting at least decent-looking people on the air...it's TV, a visual medium, i dont think there's a crime in that...as long as the person is actually good and credible)

the part i highlighted in red, drives me crazy. a $700,000 salary?! yeah, maybe if your a veteran anchor in a top three market....that is NOT the norm. another side note, if people get intotv news because they want to be celebrities, they will be sadly disappointed...unless they somehow think it's cool to get recognized once in a while at the drug store! you have to love reporting and telling stories to like this job...doing it just because you want to be on tv is not the right reason.

here's the article:

A newspaper is a news medium, with a little entertainment thrown in, while TV is essentially an entertainment medium with a little news thrown in, with the exception, of course, of the very young all-news cable TV networks.

So TV news, by its nature, has to be entertaining as well as newsy. And I think that, due to that, TV journalists have to be entertaining, too.

I don't mean that they have to be able to juggle or fold balloons or tap dance. I mean they have to be physically attractive and personable and have nice speaking voices.

I don't know exactly when TV news people all of a sudden became beautiful.

I grew up watching Chet Huntley and David Brinkley on NBC and Walter Cronkite on CBS.
Walter Cronkite wasn't exactly a handsome man. He definitely wasn't beautiful or “foxy” like Alycia Lane. But Cronkite was regarded as the most trusted man in America. He was like your uncle or grandfather. When he reported the news, people believed him.

And that's not to imply that you can't trust the news reported by someone with an attractive face.

It's just that it seems that TV news people double as journalists and celebrities. They're paid handsomely (it has been reported that Alycia Lane earns about $700,000 a year), they look good, they get good haircuts and nice wardrobes. They're recognizable.
DisplayAds ('Middle');

They're celebrities — being on TV automatically confers a kind of celebrity status — and probably some of them expect to be treated as celebrities.

Maybe it's unavoidable.

They come into people's living rooms to deliver the news. Their faces are up there on that 45-inch flat screen, so it kind of makes sense that they'd want to put faces up there that were easy to look at. Nobody wants to look at ugly people reading the news when they're eating dinner.
It's bad for ratings. And TV news shows, like TV entertainment shows, are all about ratings.

Print journalists, on the other hand, labor in almost obscurity. They put their names at the top of their stories, but few readers remember who they are.

Print columnists are perhaps a little more recognizable if only because their photograph usually accompanies their work.

2008!

i hope everyone had a fun time last night! i ended up staying at work until about 11:15 and by the time i got home, about 11:45 i got ready for bed and went to sleep. i didnt even turn the tv on to at least watch the ball drop in nyc! lame, huh? hey, there's always next year! i am excited to see what 2008 has in store for me..i think it's going to be a really good year :)

i have never made a new years resolution and the same will go for this year. i know the big one for a lot of people is to lose weight and excercise more...and i think that's a great resolution, i really do. however, one thing that i cant help but be annoyed by is for about the first 6 to 8 weeks of a new year the gyms will be packed with newbies (most of who wont be even be going come march!) that means, all these new years resolution people are going to be taking up all the treadmills while other people who have been going 4 or 5 days a week since they were 17 (like me!) will have to wait to get on the machines. i guess i will just have to be sure to bring extra patience with me.

and now...im done venting :) to end on a positive note...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
